By using a throwing knife or an arrow to bait the Waterfowl Dance from a distance and then roll through the final set of flurries.Do one more roll to the side to avoid the final set. By running straight back from mid range when she jumps to avoid the first two flurries, then rolling into the third set of slashes as she passes overhead.After the third set, she does one final AoE slash when she lands. Waterfowl Dance: Malenia jumps up, then dives at you and does three sets of AoE slashes. She also has a lifesteal ability that lets her gain health when she successfully hits you, even if you block with your shield. Getting caught in one moveset can be enough to one-shot you. Malenia will be a difficult boss due to the speed of her attack patterns paired with her high damage. Malenia, Blade of Miquella Attack Patterns Malenia, Blade of Miquella (Phase 1) If it's been over 20-30 seconds since she last used Waterfowl, run away as she's recovering from the riposte and use an arrow or a throwing knife to bait out the next Waterfowl Dance before going back into the next string of parries. Also you can go for a wake up attack after a riposte for extra damage, but only do so if she has done the Waterfowl Dance recently. This may sound like a lot, but Malenia usually chains parry-able attacks one after another giving you plenty of opportunities.
Malenia takes three parrys to stagger, although it is possible to get her to stagger with fewer parries if you have dealt enough poise damage already. Once you learn Malenia's attack timings, parrying her becomes very consistent. You'll also be able to stagger her after three successful parries. Doing charged attacks will speed up this process, and you'll eventually be able to deal a critical hit. Malenia's low poise means you can stagger and knock her down with enough hits. Do charged and heavy attacks to stagger Malenia If you don't have Bleed weapons, you can also coat yours in Blood Grease instead. Make sure to coat your weapon in Freezing Grease to inflict even more damage due to her lack of resistance to Frost. Malenia is extremely susceptible to Bleed so using weapons such as Bloodhound's Fang will let you bring her health down quicker. Exploit Malenia's weaknesses to Bleed and Frost You can also summon a Spirit Ash to have an easier time using this move.
It has a wide enough AoE that you can reliably hit her most times. Hoarfrost Stomp is the best Ash of War to use against Malenia since it can both stagger her and deal Frost damage. It's also recommended that you use the Cerulean Hidden Tear to eliminate all FP cost for several seconds to in preparation for this attack, as Malenia always starts phase 2 with this move. Comet Azur or Meteorite will be particularly effective since she won't be able to avoid these. She takes around 5 or 6 seconds to recover from this attack, giving you enough time to fire off a more powerful spell. In Phase 2, Malenia's recovery animation after Scarlet Aeonia (giant scarlet rot flower dive bomb attack) will be your best opportunity to deal damage from range. Use Comet Azur After Malenia's Scarlet Aeonia Attack For a quick spell with a lower FP cost, it's also recommended to have Glintstone Pebble attuned as an alternative, although Glintstone Pebble is more likely to miss.
For spellcasters, use Rock Sling as your main attack since it tracks Malenia. Use Bloodbone Arrows or Rock Sling as your main attackįor bow users, Bloodbone Arrows will be the best option to deal extra damage due to Malenia's weakness to Bleed. Some alternative recommended summons are Black Knife Tiche that dodges around a lot, or the Avionette Soldier Ashes that inflict Bleed and do high poise damage, but have lower health than the Mimic Tear or Tiche.
The downside to using a summon like Mimic Tear is that Malenia can lifesteal off of summons. Equip a melee weapon that can cause Bleed damage such as Rivers of Blood before summoning so that it can inflict Bleed Buildup. Level this summon up to at least +9 to maximize its tankiness and damage output. Using Mimic Tear will make it easier to stay behind Malenia and attack her freely. Malenia's speed will make it difficult to find an opening to cast spells. Use Summons Like Mimic Tear or Black Knife Tiche
